A booster pump is a machine which will increase the pressure of a liquid or even gas, which is already flowing from one place to another through pipes.
How and where is booster pump used?
Booster pump is used in combination with Vertical Turbine/Submersible pumps to further increase the pressure of drinking or irrigation water pumped from wells, and move it quickly to the destination. Booster pump for gas is used for increasing gas pressure, transferring high pressure gas, charging gas cylinders and scavenging (pushing exhausted gas-charge out of the cylinder and drawing in a fresh draught of air or fuel/air mixture for the next cycle).
Types of booster pumps
Theoretically, there are basically 2 types of booster pumps: Single Stage (which also comes in many designs) & Multi-stage.
These are the different designs of Booster pumps:
- End suction pump (single stage)
- Horizontal split case pump (single stage)
- Multistage pump
- Or vertical turbine pump (single stage)
Which booster pump is to be used depends on the flow and pressure requirement.
What is the difference between “single stage” and “multi-stage” booster pumps?
All the Single-Stage pumps have one Impeller (rotating component of a centrifugal pump which increases the speed of the fluid in pipes). Multi-stage pumps have multiple Impellers which propel fluid to greater distances than what a single Impeller can.
Single-stage booster pumps are used in buildings (residential or commercial) that are far away from the municipal water supply or used in buildings to lift water to high-rising buildings. They are also used in fields for irrigation purposes.
Multi-stage pumps are used to transmit water in high-rising hilly areas for residential, commercial or agricultural purposes. It is also used in very, very high-rising buildings (more than 20 stories, let’s say) to push the water to the top-most floor.
